Bank ReconciliationExcelGeneral LedgerException Review

What I work on

I perform bank and account reconciliations by matching bank movements against ledgers, invoices, payments, and supporting documents. In one role, this process covered 11 bank accounts.

Workflow

  1. Bank statement
  2. General Ledger
  3. Reference & amount matching
  4. Timing-difference review
  5. Supporting-document check
  6. Adjustment / follow-up
  7. Closing reconciliation

Logic & technical approach

  • Matching uses a combination of references, amounts, dates, and transaction descriptions.
  • Exceptions are separated so review focuses on unmatched transactions or differences.
  • Cross-checking is performed against invoices, payments, and supporting documents.
  • Reconciliation results are used as a control before closing.

Accounting controls

  • A transaction should not be treated as matched without sufficient evidence.
  • Timing differences must be distinguished from incorrect postings.
  • Outstanding transactions need a clear status and follow-up.
  • Adjustments require a basis and supporting documentation.

Outcome / value

This approach helps keep bank and ledger balances traceable and makes it easier to resolve differences before closing.
